Bees, Seas and Refugees

Hello, friends!  Rob here.

This is kind of an odd week.  First we had last weekend, which began with a stellar homefield show with Rotary Downs at One-Eyed Jack’s.  While I’ve been to plenty of Quintron and Miss Pussycat’s 4 AM Halloween shindigs in that room, I had never actually played there before.  Between the acoustics, the vibe and the size (just big enough that you feel like a rockstar for playing it, just small enough that you feel like a rockstar for packing it out), it’s definitely a good room for us.  I’m already looking forward to next time.

Also, in case you somehow missed it, last week was the third annual 48-hour Andrew’s-birthday-and-then-Rob’s-birthday funathon.  For me, it’s two consecutive years of playing shows on my birthday.  Now, the thing about being a band guy is that sometimes people already want to buy you a drink.  But when you are a band guy and also a birthday boy, it’s like when scientists tried to crossbreed African and European honeybees.  Sure, you might get more honey, but a few people are going to die from bee stings and then before you know it Fox is airing a made-for-TV movie about how killer bees are going to conquer the United States and drive the few surviving refugees into the cold, unforgiving north*.

Okay, maybe it’s not really like that.  The point is, I think this year will prove to be an improvement over last year’s birthday fiasco, at least in the sense that it won’t be followed by a four-month trickle of anecdotes about my behavior that I really didn’t want to hear.

Saturday’s riverboat party in Memphis was another first for me (and the rest of the band as well).  Playing music while maintaining balance on the turbulent waters of the high seas Mississippi River presented a completely new type of challenge, but other than the occasional mic stand falling over (always one of mine, because I’m so awesome) everything was hunky-dory.

Our schedule this weekend is a little unusual.  In order to make it to Bluffton, SC for tomorrow’s show at 9 Promenade, we need to leave tonight and knock out some of the driving ahead of time.  Then, we’ll be at Five Spot in Atlanta on Friday (two consecutive venues with numbers in their names!  Alert the “nobody cares” patrol!).  But, because we’re playing the 428th annual Oak Street Po-Boy Festival on Sunday, we’ll be using Saturday as a driving day and then we’ll have Saturday night off in New Orleans.

So, in short, is anything cool happening Saturday night?  Let me know.

*: I’m not ashamed to admit that when I was nine years old and had no concept of overblown media hype, “Deadly Invasion” absolutely terrified me.  It probably didn’t help that the family’s last name was “Ingram.”

If you guys are still searching a chill Saturday night plan before Po-Boy Fest, you are cordially invited the November Beer Pong Tournament at The Castle (aka the corner of Willow and Adams in Uptown) at 9pm.

What’s better than dominating a BP Tourney on Saturday and then blowing the minds of Po-Boy stuffed music lovers on Sunday?

The OEJ 11-11-11 concert was, in a word, epic. Keep rocking!

The “Nobody Cares” patrol has been alerted and will arrive Sunday with their weapons drawn.

Rob, you boys deserve a night off – especially a Saturday night. Y’all are the hardest working band I know of, so take advantage of the time off. Happy Birthday to you and Andrew.

Just an aside: You write so well! I am very impressed. :)

Saw the show in Bluffton, SC last night. You guys were phenomenal. I’m the guy that bought your sign. I’m thinking it could be worth millions one day (or at least thousands)! Best of luck and keep jammin’.
