Hello, friends! Rob here.
Hey, remember how hot it was on Saturday? How incredibly, mercilessly hot it was outside? How, when you stepped outside, you thought to yourself how insane anyone would have to be to want to do anything in this heat?
Didn’t you hear the term “record-breaking” thrown around once or twice?
Due to the menacing heat, our afternoon set at Back to the Beach Festival on Saturday in Kenner (they mean the beach on Lake Pontchartrain) presented me with a unique set of challenges. Why does my battle station onstage have to be the one little ten-square-foot patch that isn’t in the shade? Can we turn the sun off for a little while? How do I inhale deeply enough to play long notes when the air is too hot to breathe? Can I get some water? I just dumped that bottle of water on my head, and it ran down my arms, and now my fingers are slipping against the pearl keys on my saxophone. Can I get some more water?
It was tough, but we survived, and although I was kind of blacked out for most of it, I think we had a good time.
Also of note! Our dear friend from Shreveport, the unstoppable Maggie Koerner has been in New Orleans to visit, and she came along with us on Saturday to sing a few words and generally be a cool person. So when I say “we” or “us” in this entry, don’t just picture six dudes because there was a girl there too.
Anyway. So we (did you remember?) Also had a show at Artmosphere in Lafayette that night. Lafayette is fun. There are many kind people in Lafayette. There is also a dog in Lafayette. Actually, there isn’t a dog in Lafayette anymore. There was a dog. A cute, scared little puppy wandering around the general Artmosphere area alone. He looked hungry. We worried about his safety and well-being. I also worried about fleas in the van, but hey who cares cute puppy right? We wrapped him up in a blanket and took him back to New Orleans, where he was quickly adopted by an acquaintance of Andrew’s.
I still worry about fleas in the van. But you can’t argue with this face:

Also, I believe we played music at Artmosphere. Not really sure.
This weekend we’re going to be exploring some new territory! New for us, at least. People who are not us have already been to these places. I mean, come on, it’s not like we’re going to be carving a van-path through some uncharted wilderness and then setting up a generator in the mountains and playing a show for all the raccoons and bears and pine trees and whatever.
Thursday! We open for Tab Benoit at the Blue Note Theater in Columbia, MO. I predict awesome.
Friday! We open for former Barenaked Ladies frontman Steven Page at KC Live in the Power & Lights District in Kansas City, MO. I predict awesome.
Saturday! We are playing a wonderful event called GeorgeFest in Olathe, Kansas, which is just outside of Kansas City. I could tell you that it’s basically a huge awesome party, but the folks who put it on are better than that, so rather than just construct an adult playground once a year and invite a thousand and a half of their closest friends to come get silly, they construct an adult playground once a year, invite a thousand and a half of their closest friends to come get silly, charge some money for it, and raise a butt-ton of dollars for Catholic Charities Adoptions Services of KC. Charity, live music, keg beer AND inflatable playground equipment? Count me in! In retrospect, I probably shouldn’t have invited my parents. Anyway, the curious can read more about it here, and I predict rad, followed by awesome.
So yeah if you’re in the area for any of these shows I strongly recommend swinging by, because every one of them is like a special beautiful little butterfly or some crap. Anyway, I am done writing.
Goodbye, friends! I like you!
