Forgive Me If I Editorialize

Hello America, Rob here.

Zack left town early morning last Saturday, and will be returning this afternoon. As a result, we haven’t been up to much this week other than our Friday show with Rebirth at Tipitina’s (which was absolutely super, by the way). In fact, most of what we’ve done this week boils down to “not much of anything at all.” But I must write words, so I’m going take this opportunity to discuss a few things I have noticed this week:

The Weather in New Orleans – OH GOD YES FINALLY

The Bedbugs in New York – Oh, get over it, you bunch of nancies. “Oh noo, bugs! I know I live in a teeming, filth-ridden metropolis, but the last thing I expected to encounter was bugs!” The Revivalists had bedbugs one time. We were staying in this dingy motel in Birmingham. We checked in at probably sometime between three and four in the morning, and there were bugs all up in the bed. Know what we did? We toughed it out for the night and left. Like men. Although I suppose that’s not really an option when it’s happening in your home, so like, sorry. I guess that kind of sucks, actually. SAVE NEW YORK

Sharktopus – (WARNING: Video contains blood, awesome, and a song that I’m pretty sure is about Sharktopus)

OH FUCKING FUCK YES

“Corn Sugar” – The American Association of Corn Refiners (or something along those lines that sounds equally made up) is attempting to re-brand High-Fructose Corn Syrup as “corn sugar,” running a bunch of hokey ads where a farmer tells his daughter about how our bodies “can’t tell the difference between corn sugar and other types of sugar.”  First of all, if “corn sugar” is real sugar, then why can’t you just call it “sugar,” Mr. Smartypants?  (The surname “Smartypants” is a proper noun, right?)  Clearly there is still a distinction being made.  Secondly, I’m pretty sure our bodies can tell the difference between real sugar and a synthetic compound that’s associated with liver damage.  I am by no means a rabid proponent of organic foods.  On top of that, I’m enough of a booze-hound that, sure, I can forgive a little liver damage between friends.  But this kind of “ooh, look, we come from plants!” rebranding just bothers me to no end.

Reviewing Old Bank Statements – Surprisingly enjoyable!  At our last meeting, we spent about 15 minutes going through some old bank statements so Ed could account for our taxable expenses and file the band’s taxes (asleep yet?).  It’s the kind of work that would probably be tedious if we were a run-of-the-mill business, but it ended up being sort of a trip down memory lane for us:

“Fifty-three dollars at Wal-Mart on September 13…  Fifty-three dollars at Wal-Mart on September 13…”  “Oh, that was the acoustic guitar Dave smashed at Throwback!”  “Oh yeah!  Awesome.”

“Four hundred twenty-seven doll-” “Alternator.”  “Ugh.”

“How the fuck did we spend eight cents at a Shell station in Georgia?”  “Well, I was pumping gas, and I accidentally hit ‘Premium’ and pumped eight cents’ worth of gasoline before I noticed my mistake.  Um, sorry.”

That last one was my fault, by the way.

That’s it, everyone!  If you’re in New Orleans, we’ll be shooting music notes out of our fingertips tonight at The Circle Bar.  We’ll be joined by British Indie sensations Tankus the Henge.  England is like Europe’s America, so if you love freedom then you should go check them out.  And then stick around and watch us, I guess.  The show is free(!), which, in my experience, is awesome.

We’ve also got a last-minute show booked at Blue Nile on Friday (more details will be provided as they present themselves),  then we’ll be returning to Pensacola on Saturday to assail the populace with rock and awe.

Lastly, we’re on the verge of some serious road time!  Next Blog Wednesday might not actually be a Blog Wednesday.  I’ll probably be switching to road mode next week, supplying you with shorter updates as time permits me.  We’ve got quite an adventure ahead of us, so keep an eye on our calendar to see if we’re coming to your area!  Goodbye friends!
